Dental Bridge Or Implant

Dental Bridge Or Implant? Advantages And Disadvantages

When a patient loses a tooth, the same doubts always arise as to how to replace the lost tooth. In the case of a loss of a single tooth, there is the possibility of replacing it with a dental implant or with a dental bridge.

The difference between the two is that with the dental bridge you have to lower the neighboring teeth, making a carving of the teeth to be able to cover them with the porcelain bridge. The fact of having to carve the dental pieces is already an inconvenience, especially if the teeth to be carved are healthy. By carving natural teeth that are healthy, we could weaken them. In the case that the teeth we have to carve are affected by decay or are weakened, then it would be a good option to cover them with the fixed bridge to reinforce them and thus, we would replenish the missing tooth.

The great disadvantage of dental bridges is precisely the fact that, in order to replace a lost tooth, it is necessary to carve neighboring natural teeth. On the other hand, dental implants also have their drawbacks, the first is the economic factor; Dental implants are priced much higher than dental bridges. This factor means that not all patients see the placement of dental implants viable.

Unlike the dental bridge, to place an implant it is necessary to go through surgery, and this can cause pain, swelling or bleeding in some cases. With implants there is a possibility that there will be a rejection of the implant, but they are usually isolated cases. Dental implants have a success rate of around 90% for the upper jaw and 95% for the lower jaw. But in many cases the success of a dental implant is above 90%, as long as it has been done properly and the patient has followed the instructions mentioned by the surgeon.

Dental implants have many advantages such as a treatment that is performed permanently and are durable, for this reason it is usually more profitable in the long run. By placing the dental implants we leave the adjacent teeth intact, there is no need for carving and they will remain healthy in perfect condition. The dental crowns (dental covers) that we place on the implants have a very natural appearance and are very aesthetic, being very similar to natural teeth and are in perfect harmony with natural neighboring teeth.

The best advantage of dental implants is that it is a durable and permanent solution, being a much more stable treatment than any other treatment alternative, they adapt perfectly to the rest of the dental arch. With dental implants, the function of the teeth is completely restored, the patient can again enjoy a chewing ability and a practically perfect bite.

Another advantage of dental implants is the comfort they offer us, this comfort is given to the fact that they feel like natural teeth since they are anchored to the bone and need less care than other treatments; such as dentures. The difference between dental bridges and implants is time, while for the realization of the dental bridge the treatment process can be about 2 or 3 weeks, the procedure for restoration with dental implants can be extended from 3 to 6 months.
